The Orlando Towers stand tall in Soweto, Johannesburg, an urban area that was once the center of popular resistance to apartheid. The two brightly decorated cooling towers were built in 1951 and decommissioned in 1998, but are popular today with local photographers and daredevils alike. One tower is a functioning billboard and the other displays the largest mural painting in South Africa. In addition to serving as public art, a platform connecting the two towers makes them a hotbed for bungee and BASE jumping.
